Registration and login are required to submit items online and to check the status of current submissions.

 

Author Guidelines

  1. How to Submit
    1. Save the manuscript as "First five words in your manuscript, lastname. (OSU dot number)". For example: "Effect of G-5 Protein Receptor, doe.2".
    2. Submit the manuscripts as an electronic file (in a MS Word format) along with all figures and tables, completed faculty-agreement and author-agreement forms and a paragraph introducing your research as e-mail attachments to juros.submissions@gmail.com.
    3. Format the Subject Line of the e-mail as the manuscript was saved: "First five words in your manuscript, last name. (OSU dot number)". For example: "Effect of G-5 Protein Receptor, doe.2".
    4. If you are unable to scan the faculty-agreement form and send it by e-mail, mail it to the JUROS mailbox at 150P Page Hall:

    5. You should receive an e-mail within the week notifying you that your submission was received. If you do not receive this e-mail, please contact Olga Borodulin at borodulin.2@osu.edu.
  2. What qualifies as research?
    1. Projects that are past or proposed submissions to the Denman Undergraduate Research Forum. Independent research for which the student has or has not received academic credit.
    2. Research which is part of a larger project.
    3. Course papers that emphasize original research.
    4. Research and creative projects including fine arts pieces and performances, films, and other media.
  3. Who can submit?
    1. Any part-time or full-time student who is currently (or within the past year) studying at the undergraduate level at OSU.
  4. Submission Requirements
    1. A submission to JUROS requires:
      1. An electronic BLIND manuscript (i.e., leave out the author(s) name(s), and all original tables and figures sent by e-mail in MS Word Doc format (or RTF) to juros.submissions@gmail.com. More information on manuscript-writing can be found on http://www.uwlax.edu/Biology/communication/ResearchManuscripts.html. If you need more information about how to write a manuscript, contact the section editor of your field (listed on the Contacts page of jurosonline.com).
      2. Completed author-agreement forms for each author and coauthor, and a faculty agreement form (found at www.jurosonline.com)
        1. After submission, coauthor(s) will be contacted personally to validate authorship before the manuscript is considered for review.
      3. A paragraph introducing/explaining your research
  5. Manuscript Formatting Guidelines
    1. Contact Information Page
      1. Student-Author Name(s)
      2. Address, phone number, e-mail and any other relevant information (e.g., anticipated change of address).
    2. Title Page
      1. Centered in the middle of the page should be (in the following order):
        1. Title
        2. Student-Author Name(s) and Advisor’s name (place an asterisk next to all undergraduate authors with each student’s University name)
        3. Student-Author’s Department
        4. Date
    3. Text
      1. Abstract that clearly summarizes the author’s research and conclusions, not exceeding 200 words.
      2. Introduction that explains the context of the research and any specific or technical terms used.
      3. Methods and findings.
      4. Conclusion that summarizes and includes implications of the research and suggestions for future research
      5. Acknowledgements that credit people or organizations that provided outside help (including funding, grants, and fellowships), not exceeding 100 words.
      6. All authors must make submissions 20-25 pages double-spaced, at most.
  6. Tables and Figures
    1. Figures should be numbered as they appear in the text. Place all figures at the end of the manuscript on a separate page. Figures include graphs, charts, tables and illustrations.
    2. Images can be color or black and white. Conversions will be made if necessary. They must be in JPEG, GIF, TIF or PNG format (For Microsoft Word users, go to Save As, Choose format under Save as Type). All images should be the highest quality possible.
    3. In conjunction with placing all Tables & Figures at the conclusion of the manuscript, submitters should also send separate files containing just the figures and tables as part of submission e-mail (for example, Microsoft Excel spreadsheets or JPEG’s of figures). The separate files should be labeled as such: Table or Figure followed by its number in the manuscript. For Example: Figure 3, Table 1.
    4. Tables & Figures should be accompanied by a legend (a caption) that allows the reader to understand the general meaning without having to read the manuscript.
  7. References
    1. The use of the program, Endnote, is highly recommended. Visit http://library.osu.edu/sites/it/ER/EndNote.php for more instructions on how to upload and use the program. Citations within the manuscript with one author should follow as (Author, Year), with two authors (Author 1 and Author 2, Year) and with more than two authors as (Author 1 et al., Year).

    EXAMPLES:

    If three authors or less:

    Zlotnick, C., Robertson, M.J., and Lahif, M. (1999). Getting off the streets: Economic resources and residential exits among homeless adults. Journal of Community Psychology, 27, 209-224.

    If 4 or more authors:

    Zlotnick et al., (1999). Getting off the streets: Economic resources and residential exits among homeless adults. Journal of Community Psychology, 27, 209-224.

  8. Page numbers, Spacing
    1. Page and Line Numbers: All pages except the Letter to the Editor, Cover Letter and Abstract should include page and line numbers.
    2. To add line numbers: (For PC, MS Word 2003 or XP)
      1. Click File, Page Setup. Choose the Layout tab.
      2. Click "Line Numbers".
      3. Mark "Add Line Numbering."
      4. Choose the default options
    3. To suppress line numbers on your first page: (For PC, MS Word 2003 or XP)
      1. Select all text on the page with the abstract.
      2. Go to Format, Paragraph. Choose the "Line and Page Breaks" tab.
      3. Mark "Suppress Line Numbers".
    4. To add page numbers: (For PC, MS Word 2003 or XP)
      1. Click the Insert Menu, Select Page Numbers
      2. Select the position of where you would like the page numbers to appear in the "Position" drop-down menu (bottom of page is preferable).
      3. Select where you want the page numbers to appear on the page in the Alignment drop-down menu.
      4. Click OK.

 

Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.

  1. A cover letter, contact page, abstract and "Intro to my research" paragraph are all included in the submission. All Tables & Figures will be included as supplementary files, and are also listed at the end of the manuscript with explanatory captions. All Tables & Figures are 300 dpi.  Any other materials necessary for the submission (paintings, videos, etc) have been submitted by first speaking to a Section Editor and confirming understanding of the responsibility of both parties to the object(s) submitted.
  2. The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines, which is found in About the Journal.  The submission file is in Microsoft Word or Rich Text (RTF) document file format.  The text is double-spaced and follows the length instructions given (and the author has looked over the SUBMISSION GUIDELINES and the PRIVACY & COPYRIGHT INFO docs). Citations follow the APA format. The manuscript contains page and line numbers as instructed.
  3. All author-agreement and faculty-agreement forms have been completed and will be included with this submission as supplementary files.
  4. If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions in Ensuring a Blind Review have been followed.
  5. License Agreement

    By submitting this agreement, the authors grant the Journal of Undergraduate Research at The Ohio State University (JUROS) the non-exclusive right to reproduce, translate, and distribute the submission (including the abstract) in print, electronic format, and any other media, including but not limited to audio or visual for the purpose of inclusion in JUROS. Authors also agree that JUROS may make and retain more than one copy for the purposes of preservation, security, and backup. Authors represent that they have the authority to grant the rights contained in this agreement. Authors also represent that their submission does not, to the best of their knowledge, infringe upon existing copyright. If the submission contains material for which authors do not hold copyright, they represent that they have obtained the unrestricted permission of the copyright owner to grant JUROS the rights by this agreement, and that such third-party material is clearly identified and acknowledged within the submission. Acceptance of this agreement gives JUROS permission to publish the submission on behalf of the authors.

Copyright Notice

Ethical Considerations

All submitted research must adhere to ethical guidelines. Any research involving the use of human or animal subjects must be approved by an Institutional Review Board as stated in Cover Letter and Manuscript. If JUROS finds that the research violates ethical guidelines, they may refuse the paper solely on this basis without consideration of other factors.

General Copyright Restrictions

All authors are required to complete an author-agreement form along with a faculty-agreement form. By agreeing to the terms in the author-agreement and faculty-agreement forms, both the faculty member and author agree to: relinquish the right to evaluate and publish submitted research to JUROS, acknowledge sole ownership to the submissions (both the actual research and the accompanying text and images), and hold harmless and indemnify the University, the journal staff, and those associated with JUROS against any claim, demand, suit, action, proceeding, recovery or expense of any nature whatsoever arising from any claim of infringement of copyrights or proprietary rights resulting from publication of the manuscript or claims of libel, obscenity, unlawfulness or invasion of privacy based upon or arising out of any matter or thing contained in the manuscript as furnished by the Author. Also, authors published in JUROS will retain all rights to their work except the right to publish in another undergraduate level journal.

 

Privacy Statement

The names and email addresses entered in this journal site will be used exclusively for the stated purposes of this journal and will not be made available for any other purpose or to any other party.

Author Privacy

Only the Chief Editor and Section Editors will have access to the identifying information. Only de-identified manuscripts will be sent to reviewers. All submissions will be reviewed in an objective manner. Upon acceptance, the production staff will receive the identifying information for use in publication. All editorial and production members of JUROS will not discuss the manuscript with outside parties until it is published online. However, once research is published, JUROS does not claim any liability for misrepresentation of research by the public. Any correspondence information or content in any media (photography, video, etc) that is voluntarily disclosed by the researcher to JUROS and is used in publication becomes publicly available. JUROS will not use any disclosed contact information (such as e-mail or mobile phone number) except during the submission process or to notify authors of JUROS administrative changes.
